k'q KLEINFELDER
1
FIELD ACTIVITIES
' Mr. Chris DeKorver Staff
Geologist for Klemfelder visited the site on November 30, 2004 to
' observe excavation activities and conduct soil sampling in the northwest corner of the site. Upon
arrival at the site, the area where the soil odor was previously noted, had apparently been
backfilled. The initial area was re-located by F&H Construction (on-site subcontractor familiar
' with the original area). The excavator and operator were provided by F&H Construction and/or
their subcontractors.
' Soil Samulin2
A shallow excavation, including three deeper test pits, was excavated. The soil generated was
stockpiled adjacent east and south of the excavation. The shallow excavation was approximately
20 feet wide by 40 feet long, a maximum of about 2 feet deep and sloped along the edges.
During excavation activities, intermittent areas of soil discoloration and petroleum like odor
' were noted. There did not appear to be a single significant source area for the discolored soil and
odor. Based on field observations it appeared that the shallow excavation had removed the
discolored soil with a petroleum like-odor. Four shallow confirmation soil samples were
' collected in the base of this shallow excavation, each approximately 2 feet below surface grade
(bsg). These confirmation soil samples were labeled CTDIS, CI, C2 and C3.
' A pre-cleaned stainless steel hand auger was used to advance a small hole approximately 2
inches in depth prior to collecting each of these shallow discrete confirmation soil samples. The
soil samples were collected using a pre-cleaned stainless steel sampler attached to a slide
' hammer.
Because of the potential for underground storage tanks associated with the former gas station
(potentially generating contamination at deeper depths), three test pits (TPI, TP-2 and TP3) were
additionally excavated within this shallow excavation. TPI, TP2 and TP3 were excavated an
additional 4, 4 and 6 feet in depth respectively. A single soil sample was collected at the base of
each test pit. For safety purposes the soil samples collected at deeper depths from the test pits
were collected directly from soil i n the bucket o f the excavator at surface grade. These soil
samples were collected by pushing a cleaned stainless steel tube directly into soil near the teeth
' of the excavator bucket.
Trace to minor debris was noted in the shallow excavation and test pits from approximately 2 to
5 feet below ground surface grade. The debris consisted of primarily bricks and few bottles.
The soil noted in the excavation was primarily a black silty clay. The discolored soil was noted
as an olive green to gray color.
' Four discrete soil samples were collected from each of the two
stockpiles generated. The soil
p
samples were collected using the same methodology as the shallow excavation. The soil samples
were collected at depths ranging from 6 inches to 3 feet beneath the surface or sides of each
stockpile.
51726/STO5RI571DH:Iv Page 2 of 7
2005,Kleinfelder, Inc.
