(AGE ) and has the following
comments .
The Report documents two soil vapor extraction (SVE ) pilot tests conducted at your
site in July 2007 . Analytical results of vapor samples collected during the two tests
reported high concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons . Based on the results of the
test AGE calculated a projected radius of influence of approximately 24 feet in each
test zone .
In the Report AGE concludes that SVE could be an effective remedial alternative for
the vadose zone soil contamination remaining at this site. However, they do not
recommend installation of a permanent SVE system . Instead AGE proposes to
conduct a dual phase extraction (DPE) pilot test on MWAA and VW- 1 . In
conversation with AGE they explained that the reason they proposed DPE is to target
soil contamination that is submerged near the top of the water table . SVE targets
vadose zone soil contamination . DPE works by extracting vapor and groundwater
from the extraction wells , which may lower the water table and expose more of the
contaminated soil to removal by SVE . In essence , the two methods, groundwater
extraction and vapor extraction , would work in conjunction with each other to
remediate both shallow and submerged soil contamination . In addition , groundwater
extraction may aid in remediation of the shallow groundwater contamination .
SJC/EHD has previously directed submittal of a feasibility study to target remediation
of the groundwater contamination . SJC/EHD has not received a technical evaluation
of the potential efficacy of groundwater extraction to address impacted groundwater
or lower groundwater elevation . Per California Code of Regulations, Title 23 ,
Chapter 16 , responsible parties of contaminated sites must conduct a feasibility study
