07 April 1999 <br /> AGE-NC Project No. 98-0481 <br /> Page 2 of 3 <br /> cubic yards of stockpiled soil. <br /> Subsequent to the UST removal, during late 1998 or early I999, earth-moving activities were <br /> conducted on the adjacent parcel and the 13 small stockpiles were consolidated into one large <br /> stockpile. <br /> ddilioonal Stockpile Soil am line <br /> On 28 January 1999, AGE collected a total of two discrete soil samples (SP-6 and SP-7) from the <br /> existing stockpile at the approximate locations of former stockpile sampling locations of SP4 and <br /> SPS. The frequency of sampling, the type of samples (discrete versus composite), and the location <br /> of soil sample collection were directed by PHS-EHD oversight personnel at the site. Soil samples <br /> were analyzed for BTEX by EPA Method 8020, TPH-d by EPA Method 8015 Modified, TPH-g by <br /> EPA Method 8015 Modified, and metals including cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and zinc by <br /> EPA Method 6010. Soil samples were analyzed by McCampbell Analytical Inc., a State of <br /> California Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified analytical laboratory. The laboratory <br /> analytical report is attached. <br /> Laboratory analytical results for the two soil samples collected from the stockpile are presented in <br /> Table 3 (attached). As shown on Table 3, relatively low concentrations of TPH-d were reported for <br /> samples SP-6 (3.5 mg/kg) and SP-7 (1.2 mg/kg). There were no reported detections of TPH-g or <br /> BTEX for the soil samples. Relatively low concentrations of metals, including chromium, lead, <br /> nickel, and zinc, were detected in the soil samples analyzed (Table 3). The reported concentrations <br /> of metals were significantly below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)- <br /> recommended Preliminary Remediation Goal (PRG) levels for residential soil (Table 3). There were <br /> no reported concentrations of cadmium for the soil samples analyzed. <br /> Conclusi ns <br /> TPH-d was the only petroleum hydrocarbon compound detected in the two soil samples collected <br /> from the soil stockpile in January 1999. The reported concentrations of TPH-d in the soil sample <br /> appears to be relatively minor. Concentrations of BTEX and TPH-g compounds appear to have <br /> decreased to below detectable levels from the previous sampling conducted in July 1997. This <br /> decrease in petroleum hydrocarbon-impacts may be the result of volatilization, aeration, and/or <br /> natural attenuation of the petroleum hydrocarbon compounds during the past year and a half, as well <br /> as due to the mixing of a relatively small volume of impacted soil (stockpiles SP4 and SP5)with the <br /> larger volume of"clean" soil stockpiled at the site.
