1
. 25 August 1998
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0481
Page 4 of 7
3.1. PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
Applicable site assessment permits will be obtained from the PHS-EHD. As required by PHS-EHD
permitting, a health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and
Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National institute for Occupational
Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
1985). Prior to mobilization, each soil probe location will be clearly marked and an utility clearance
obtained through Underground Service Alert.
3.2. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Initially,AGE proposes to advance five soil probe borings in the vicinity of the former fuel dispenser
island and waste oil UST to evaluate the lateral and vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbon
impaction. Proposed probe boring locations are illustrated in Figure 2.
One probe boring is proposed beneath the east portion of the former fuel dispenser island at the
location previously reported with elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbon compounds.
Two probe borings will be located north and south of the former fuel dispenser island. One probe
boring will be located east of the former fuel dispenser island. Samples collected from the proposed
probe boring located east of the former fuel dispenser island will be utilized to evaluate the lateral
extent of hydrocarbon impacts that potentially occurred subsequent to the previous Phase Il
investigation. In addition, one probe boring will be advanced within the former waste oil UST area.
Based on the results of the previous Phase Il assessment and UST removal sampling, additional
investigation west of the former fuel dispenser island or within the area of the former USTs is not
proposed.
All probe borings are proposed to be advanced to 30 feet bsg. However,total depths of probe borings
will be based on field observations and field screening using an organic vapor monitor (OVM). Soil
samples will be collected from each probe boring at five-foot intervals beginning at 10 feet bsg to
the total depth. Field procedures for advancement of probe borings and collection of soil samples
are presented in Section 4.2. At least one sample from each probe boring will be submitted for
laboratory analysis.
Selected soil samples will be analyzed by a State of California Department of Toxic Substances
Control (DTSC)-certified laboratory for the following constituents:
• TPH-d by EPA Method 8015 Modified/5030;
• TPH-g by EPA Method 8015 Modified/5030;
Advanced G coEnviron mental,Inc.
