California St. CUF Claim #:011775
Stockton, CA., 95204
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD) has reviewed
Work Plan for MW-9S and D, and MW-6S and D (to include MW-1 destruction)
dated October 5, 2005 submitted by your consultant, Foothill Engineer (FE) and
has the following comments.
EH.D has required you in previous correspondence (April 13, 2005) to'evaluate if
MW-1 may be providing a vertical conduit fort the migration of underground
storage tank (UST) contaminants between the upper sand zone and the lower
sand zone known to exist below this site or have MW-1 destroyed and replaced
with separate upper zone and lower zone monitoring well screened intervals.
The work plan submitted proposes a 'pressure grout' destruction of MW-1 and
replacing it with `nested' MW-1 S&D (both PVC casings installed in one 10-inch
borehole) and in response to State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB)
Clean Up Fund (CUF) concerns, install an additional up-gradient monitoring well
with deep and shallow screened intervals to investigate the potential of an offsite
source of contamination.
In order to install MW-1 S&D and upgradient M -6S&D, EHD will require
centralizers to be installed to ensure that the P C casings are at least 2-inches
from each other and the wall of the borehole.
For future over-bore destruction of a nested monitoring well, EHD will require that
a larger auger must be used to ensure that the over-bore can reach the borehole
wall from a casing that will be offset from the center of the hole. When the over-
bore auger is centered on the deep casing, experience has shown that proper
over-bore destruction of a 10-inch borehole requires at least a 14-inch auger to
reach the furthest most side of the borehole.
