On
June 6, 1996,Thorpe Oil removed two empty underground storage tanks from the property under
a permit from the PHS/EHD. Soil samples from the tank excavation were obtained using standard
methods and locations. The sample from under T #1 was taken at a depth of+/-eight feet. The
sample from Tank#2 was taken at a depth of+/-nine feet. Both these samples and samples from
the excavation spoil showed evidence of hydrocarbori contamination(See map enclosed). All of the
above samples were analyzed by GeoAnalytical Laboratories, Inc. The location of Tank #1 is
between two structures and is 25'from the closest ac ess point by drilling equipment.Tank#2 could
be accessed by vertical drilling equipment.
Pha.,;q.l..of the.Site IrtMestigation required.drilling a slant soil boring under Tank#1 and a vertical
soil bore at the location of Tank#2.
Phase 2 of the Site Investigation was conducted to efine the vertical and horizontal extent of the
contamination plume. It was completed on 5/28/98 with the installation of MW#2S, MW#2D,
MW#3S, MW#3D, and MW#4S, MW#4D. A double monitoring well was installed in each
location. The shallow wells (noted by the "S" letter) had a total depth of+/-55' and the deep
monitoring wells had a total depth of+/-75'.The ori inal set of water samples was made on 6111198
(see water sample analysis, attached). The latest water samples were taken 3/17/05.
Monitoring wells MW#5S and MW#5D were installed on 11/07/01 in the parking lane on the East
side of California Street. Soil samples indicate he presence of 1,2-Dichloroethane and 1,1-
Dichloroethene in low concentrations.BTEX was not found in this new soil bore or water samples.
1
