Stantec
Well Destruction Work Plan
ARCO Service Station No. 2186
February 7, 2012
Stantec will oversee a C-57-licensed contractor over-drill two groundwater monitoring wells
(MW-1 R and MW-1 D) in accordance with the California well standards. Each well borehole will
be air-knifed to approximately 6.5 feet bgs to investigate that no underground facilities exist
within the area of drilling. Prior to over-drilling activities, the well casing will be inspected for
obstructions; if obstructions are found, they will be removed. Each well will be over-drilled using
a drill rig equipped with a hollow stem auger (auger to be eight or ten inch diameter depending
on the borehole diameter) to remove material within the-origin rbo eH&le including the well
casing, filter pack, and annular seal. The borehole will then be grouted with neat cement using
a tremie_pipe system forming a grout cap/surface seal from the bottom of the borehole to one
feet`bgs. If groundwater is expelled during the grouting process, it will be properly contained,
characterized, and disposed. The borehole locations will be backfilled and resurfaced with
appropriate materials to match the existing grade.
Waste Handling and Disposal
Soil cuttings, drilling fluids, and personal protective equipment generated during drilling
operations will be containerized in Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved 55-gallon
drums and temporarily stored on the subject property pending characterization and disposal.
Upon characterization, wastes will be transported by a disposal contractor to an appropriate
disposal or treatment facility.
Reporting
Upon completion of the proposed scope of work, Stantec will prepare a report summarizing the
well destruction activities. The report will be submitted to ARCO and the SJCEHD and will
include updated data tables and figures, copies of field notes, and laboratory analytical results.
Also per Assembly Bill 2886 requirements, Stantec will electronically upload the data obtained
into the Regional Water Quality Control Board GeoTracker database.
Schedule
Stantec is prepared to implement the proposed scope of work upon receipt of a written approval
from SJCEHD. The schedule for the proposed scope of work is as follows.
• Well and encroachment permit preparation — up to two weeks
• Well destruction—three to four weeks
• Reporting —three weeks
2186 Well Destruction Work Plan.doc 3
