Groundwater was removed to accommodate installation of the new
USTs.
EXCAVATION AND REMOVAL ACTIVITIES
The USTs, associated product lines, and product dispensers were removed on November
10, 1997 by Gettler-Ryan, Inc. Excavation, removal, and sampling activities were
observed and approved by Mr. Mike Infurna and Mr. Robert McClellon of the San Joaquin
County Public Health Services Department, Mr. Frank H. Pinnell of Five-Star Enterprises,
and Mr. James.Monty of the Manteca-Lathrop Fire District.
Facilities removed included two 10,000-gallon and one 4,000-gallon double-walled
gasoline tanks, associated fiberglass product lines, and product dispensers. The tanks
appeared to be in good condition, with no apparent holes or cracks noted during removal.
Approximately 1,241 tons of hydrocarbon-impacted soil were removed from the site and
transported by Manley and Sons Trucking, Inc. to Forward Landfill in Stockton,
California.
UST COMPLEX SAMPLING
Six soil samples were collected on November 10, 1997 from the UST excavations at
depths of 13 and 14 feet bgs. Analytical soil results indicated maximum concentrations of
TPH-g, benzene, and MtBE in the area of sample T-3-E at 5,800 parts per million(ppm),
3.6 ppm, and3.6 ppm, respectively. Concentrations of TPH-g ranging from 130 to 1,800
ppm were detected in the remaining samples. Benzene was only detected in one other
sample, T-1-S, at 0.52 ppm. MtBE was also only detected in one other sample, 0.19 ppm
in T-2-N. With the exception of the MtBE concentrations summarized above, no other
oxygenates were detected by EPA Method 8260 in any of the samples. In addition, no lead
was detected in any of the collected samples. UST soil analytical data is presented in
Table 1 and sample locations are shown on Figure 2.
Three composite samples (SP-1, SP-2, and SP-3) were collected from the stockpiled soil.
Four sleeves were collected and composited into one sample for analysis. TPH-g was
reported in all three samples at concentrations ranging from l 1 to 180 ppm. Ethylbenzene
and total xylenes were reported in SP-I at concentrations of 0.18 and 9.3 ppm,
respectively. Stockpiled soil analytical data is presented in Table 2.
Four well boxes were installed on site by Gettler-Ryan in preparation for future well
installation.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
• Six soil samples collected beneath the old UST complex contained concentrations of
TPH-g ranging from 130 to 5,800 ppm. Benzene was not detected in four of the six
samples. Benzene was detected in T-I-S and T-3-E at concentrations of 0.52 and 3.6
91 1-t10>-I A/TKPULRPT-DOC
