0
10 May 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0232
The State of California Department of Health Services adopted a concentration of 13 µg/1 as an
action level for MTBE in March 1999, and a concentration of 5 µg/I as a secondary maximum
contaminant level (MCL) in January 1999. A secondary MCL addresses "aesthetic" qualities of
drinking water at contaminated concentrations that can be smelled or tasted. The action level was
established to address potential cancer concerns and replaced the action level of 35 µg/1 established
in 1991. At this point in time, the MTBE concentrations detected exceed the secondary MCL and
nearly equal the action level, as determined by EPA Method 8260M analysis.
Based on data from the water samples collected from the domestic well located at Rocky's
restaurant, it is recommended that a contingency plan be developed for the domestic drinking water
well with respect to MTBE concentrations. It is also recommended that all property owners
associated with the domestic drinking water well be duly notified as to the recent MTBE detected
concentrations. It is advised that Mr. Mike Infuma of the San Joaquin Cowtty Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division be contacted to discuss the matters further.
The opportunity to provide this service is greatly appreciated.
