28 January 1998
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0232
4.0. PROCEDURES
4.1. DRILLING AND SAMPLING
The following procedures will be performed for the installation of ground water monitoring wells:
1. Prepare a Site Health and Safety Plan in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities.
2. Notify the Public Health Services - Environmental Health Division at least 48 hours prior to
commencement of any work, while securing proper city/county permits.
3. Boring locations will be marked at least 48 hours in advance for an Underground Service
Alert (USA) check of underground utilities or pipes.
4. Initially, advance three soil borings utilizing a truck-mounted drill rig, and 10-inch diameter
hollow stem augers. The borings will be advanced to approximate depths of 55 feet.
Proposed boring locations are depicted on Figure 2. Additional soil borings may be advanced
based upon field observations.
5. Decontaminate all sampling equipment in an alconox solution and rinse twice with water
prior to each sampling run. Steam-clean auger flights before advancement of each boring.
6. Soil samples will be collected at each boring in 5-foot intervals beginning at a depth of 15
feet bsg. All soil samples will be collected utilizing a California split-spoon sampler and 2-
inch by 6-inch brass sleeves.
7. Preserve soil in the brass sleeve by covering both ends with aluminum foil or teflon tape,
capping, and sealing with tape.
8. Store the samples under ice and transport the samples in a chilled ice chest to a State certi fled
laboratory for analysis.
9. Screen soil sample duplicates for the presence of volatile organics using a photo-ionization
detector (PID) pre-calibrated to isobutylene.
10. Log sample duplicates in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System.
11. Selected soil and grab ground water samples will be analyzed for MTBE in accordance with
the appropriate EPA methods. The PHS-EHD will be given the opportunity to review
selected samples prior to Iaboratory analysis.
12. Cuttings and rinseate generated during drilling activities will be containerized in properly
labeled D.O.T. model 17H 55-gallon drums, and stored on-site in an area lacking public
access. Disposal alternatives will be evaluated based on results of laboratory analysis.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
