11 September 2001
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0.866
3.1. SOIL SAMPLING PROCEDURES .
Soil borings will be advanced utilizing hollow-stem auger drilling techniques. Soil samples will be
collected at approximately 20 feet bsg in each of the borings utilizing a California modified split-
spoon sampler fitted with 2-inch diameter 6-inch long brass sleeves.Upon removal from the sampler
the sample sleeves will be separated using a clean knife.Subsequently, the exposed end of the sleeve
will be covered with Teflon sheets, plastic ending caps and sealed with tape. Soil encountered in the
borings will be visually;classified by an AGE geologist or environmental specialists in accordance
with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). .
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve will be labeled with the boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in
an ice chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a
DHS-certified laboratory. "
3.2. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
A Grab ground water sample will be collected from the soil boring location in the proposed UST pit.
The Soil boring will be advanced to the top of the ground water"table,as identified by collection of
a saturated soil sample. Once ground water has been encountered, a hydropunch-equivalent water
sampling device will be driven two to three feet into the water, bearing zone. Ground water sample
will be collected from.the hydropunch-equivalent-water sampling assembly fitted with one-inch
diameter 0.010-inch slotted temporary well screen. Each ground water sample will be extracted by
lowering a bailer through the hollow center of the drive rods into the screen section. However, based
on subsurface and drilling conditions, grab ground water.samples may be collected directly through
the hollow stem augers using a disposable bailer.
Ground water sample will be collected into laboratory-supplied'containers.Ground water sample for
(TPH-g), BTEX and MTBE in accordance with EPA Methods 8015M and 8020 analysis will be
collected into 40-m1 VOA vials containing 0.5-m1 of hydrochloric acid as preservative. Following
collection the samples will be placed on ice and kept in a cooler until delivered to the laboratory for
analysis.Chain-of-custody protocols will be used to document sample custody transfer from the field
to the analytical.laboratory. A chain-of-custody form will accompany the samples.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
