Unlike systemic hypothermia, frostbite rarely occurs unless the <br /> ambient temperatures are less than treezing and usually less than 200F <br /> Symptoms of frostbite are: a sudden olancning or whiterung of the sxin; the <br /> � skin has a waxy or white appearance ana is firm to the touch; tissues are cold, <br /> pale, and solid. <br /> Prevention of Cold Related Illness - <br /> Educate workers to recognize the svmntoms of frostbite ana hvpothermia <br /> Identify ana limit known risk factors- <br /> Assure the availability of enclosea, heatea environment on or adjacent to the <br /> site. <br /> • Assure the availability of dry changes of clothing. <br /> • Develop the capability for temperature recording at the site. <br /> • Assure the availability of warm drinks. <br /> Monitoring - <br /> i <br /> - Start (oral) temperature recording a the job site <br /> • At the Field Team L,eaaer s discretion when suspicion is bases on changes <br /> in a worker's performance or mental status <br /> • At a worker s request. <br /> • As a screening measure, two tithes oer shift, under unusually hazardous <br /> conditions (e.g., wind-chill less than 20OF car wind-cht1I less than 30°F with <br /> precipitation) <br /> ' As a screening measure whenever any one worker on the site develops <br /> hypothermia. <br /> Any person devetooing moderate hvpotnerrnia (a core temperature of 92°F) <br /> cannot return to work for 48 hours <br /> 1 <br /> EJS/sY=-D i/0= <br /> 2-S <br />
