Parsons Engineering Science, Inc
r
' PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of the work recently performed was to complete characterization of the
lateral and vertical extent of soil and groundwater contamination associated with the former
operation of onsite UFSTs In particular, the work was performed to close a potential data
i gap concerning the extent of contamination to the west of the site In order to achieve this
goal, Parsons Engineering Science, Inc (Parsons ES) implemented a workplan (Parsons ES
1995) that included the following
• Advancement of a soil boring
• Collection and analysis of subsurface soil samples
• Installation of a groundwater monitoring well
r
• Collection and analysis of groundwater samples
SITE DESCRIPTION
Local Description, Surrounding Land Use and Climate
Greyhound operates a passenger bus terminal at 121 South Center Street, Stockton,
California (Figures 1 and 2) As part of routine operations, Greyhound previously utilized
and maintained one 12,000-gallon diesel UFST for the purpose of refueling buses In May
1991, Greyhound removed this UFST and associated piping A preliminary site investigation
was completed in November 1991
The site is located in the City of Stockton, San Joaquin County, near the corner of Center
and Washington Streets The area surrounding the facility consists of mixed commercial and
residential properties The terrrunal is bordered on the north by Market Street, on the south
by a Chevron gasoline station and Washington Street, on the East by Center Street, and on
the West by Commerce Street
The climate of the area is characterized by wet, mild winters and dry, hot summers
Rainfall occurs intermittently, but is concentrated between September and March Average
annual precipitation in the Stockton area has been approximately 14 1 inches over the past
thirty years (NOAA, 199 1)
Local Geolo and Hvdroeolo
The facility is located in the San Joaquin Valley portion of the Great Central Valley
Geomorphic Province of California (Norris and Webb 1990) The Stockton area, including
the Greyhound facility, is underlain by non-marine, Pleistocene and Holocene deposits of
fluvial and lacustrine origins Deposits at the facility generally consist of reddish-brown to
PARESSYR01 VOLIR\WP172760780969127607R03WW6 2
