Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201 ENVIROMEvTAL HEALTH
FERMIT/SERVICES
Re : Marley Cooling Tower Company
Dear Dr. Khanna:
Our law firm represents former employees of the Marley
Company and residents who lived near their lumber treating
plant. We are concerned that although the State has made
progress with site cleanup, little has been done to
concisely assess the facility ' s impact on the health of
people .
As you are probably aware , state-ordered tests have
discovered significant contamination (at a few sites) in the
ditches which run along the residential streets adjoining
the south yard of the Marley facility.
It appears to us that a high percentage of people in
this neighborhood have unexplained allergies, rashes,
irritations and headaches . It has not escaped our attention
that this situation may be attributed to chromium exposure ,
especially since chromium salts are very allergenic .
We recently met with Dr. Lynn Goldman, DOHS
Epidemiology Section , Berkeley, concerning possible
state-sponsored studies of employees and Franklin High
School graduates . I have enclosed for your reference a copy
of a letter from this office to Ms. Marge Rouch, DOHS, Toxic
Substances Control Division , Sacramento, which outlines our
more serious concerns .
