Page Three
Ms . March Rouch -
September 16, 1986
Re : Marley Cooling Tower Co. "
J iS T •
' pattern which is readily interpreted. He would feel ok on
Mondays, by Wednesday or Thursday he would be sick, and
would need to rest all weekend long in order to become well -
again . r: r
(B) 42-year-old male, recently deceased. This person,,!'
died of cancer. Irrespective o w ether we succeed in 1
proving his cancer was caused by Marley, his exposures are
extensive . This man was a carpenter-lumber hauler for 17
years at Marley. Before he died he provided his wife with
the following information: Except for eye goggles, Marley
never provided the employees with protective outer clothing
or gloves . He was contaminated on his arms and hands by the
green toxic treating solution ( from contact with the wood) .
He also came home every day smelling intensely of noxious ,
volatile inking compounds .
We are accurately informed that the sawing or drilling
of treated lumber did occur and that this, and asbestos
fabrication, happened without adequate protection of
employees .
I would appreciate it if you could give me any
information you have on the inking solution or stamp pads
used by the carpenters . In addition, I am now concerned
that, for one reason or another, the large quantities of
sawdust which covered peoples ' houses (one inch deep
per night ) may not have been inert .
While recently reviewing the documents which .we
received from the State and the EPA, I came across a letter
written by Sue Sher. (Document appended ) . I do not wish to
imply there is anything "wrong" with the letter since I do
not know the exact context in which it was written; however,
I would suggest that the need now exists to have any health
problems possibly inflicted upon the neighborhood evaluated.
I shall discuss this with Dr . Goldman at DOHS, Berkeley. I
would appreciate your comments on further sampling of
drainage ditches (particularly ) where they leave Marley, the
soil under Marley 's main parking lot at the south yard , and
