I will be meeting with Dr. Goldman concerning i,
our request for state-sponsored epidemiology studies for
' Marley employees and near-site residents . I am pleased you
have made progress with a site clean-up plan but I feel that '
little has been done to analyze past exposure of local
residents and employees .
I have decided to provide two examples which underscore
the potential gravity of human exposure at Marley. We have
made contact with several persons whose own experiences
conform to the two I shall now briefly describe. f ,
(A) . 35-year-old male . This person moved into the area
(south side of Marley, one house removed from the fence) in
1962 while in the third grade . He remained a resident for
15 years . As a child he had chronic chest pains, rashes,
and headaches which were so intense they apparently
triggered vomiting attacks . As a child he played games in
the North and South Marley yards which may be peppered with
surface deposits of brightly colored chromium and copper
salts . He always played in or sat in the drainage ditches
in front of his house which drain off of the Marley facility.
As you are well aware , these ditches overflow into peoples '
yards . These ditches carried pigments suggestive of run-off
from Marley.
In addition, the Marley facility was only marginally
fenced . He and his playmates would routinely play on or
near large piles of toxic treated lumber stored in the south
yard ( incidently, toxic lumber is still apparently stored in
the south yard . ) This person has severe problems with
various internal organs including loss of a kidney at age
13 . This person went to work for Marley at age 18 . His job
was to move toxic lumber which was accomplished with his
bare hands . Amazingly, he was fired because "he was sick
too much. " His work-related illness follows a peculiar
