Marley Cooling Tower Co. 3 20 September 1990
ground water extraction efforts (both capture zone verification and water quality
changes) . If Marley determines that the existing North Area ground water monitoring
network does not meet these four objectives, then they must install additional
monitoring wells.
Since Marley is proceeding with the installation of interim ground water extraction
projects in the North Yard and along the downgradient edge of the plume, they must
submit their monitoring plans to measure the effectiveness of these interim ground
water extraction projects as soon as possible.
The Hargis Associates proposal also includes the semi-annual sampling of the domestic
and irrigation wells south of Main Street, except for two wells along Main Street
labeled MSD and MSI that will be sampled quarterly. The locations of these other
irrigation and domestic wells must be plotted on the contaminant iso-concentration maps
and the rationale for sampling them twice a year must be provided. If these wells are
within the contaminant plume, or immediately downgradient, they will require quarterly
sampling.
Finally, total chromium concentration trend diagrams were presented in the July
quarterly monitoring report for three monitoring wells. These diagrams are very
informative and should be prepared for all of the monitoring wells at the site. The
temporal variations of chromium levels within individual wells should be correlated
with changing ground water gradients to identify seasonal and/or longer term trends
(i .e. , drought-induced changes). Also, these diagrams can be used to justify a further
reduction in the size of a monitoring program if they show, for example, that chromium
concentrations within a particular well have not varied significantly over time.
