0 • <br /> 8.0 CONTINGENCY PLAN <br /> 8.1 General <br /> Each subcontractor will be required to provide all the equipment necessary to meet safe <br /> operating practices and procedures for its personnel onsite and be responsible for the <br /> safety of its workers. All general safety guidelines and procedures will conform to: <br /> • 20 CFR 1910.120 <br /> • Standard Operating Safety Guides (USEPA, November 1984) <br /> The general safe work practices are described below: <br /> • Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, and smoking will not be allowed at <br /> designated work areas; <br /> • Wash facilities will be utilized by workers in the work areas before eating, <br /> drinking, or use of the toilet facilities; <br /> • Containers will be labeled identifying their contents; <br /> • Personnel at the Site will use the "buddy system" when wearing any <br /> respiratory protective equipment. No one will be allowed to engage in drilling <br /> and sampling operations alone; <br /> • No facial hair which interferes with a satisfactory fit of the mask to face seal <br /> will be allowed (no beards, large mustaches, or long sideburns); <br /> • All respirator protection selection, use, and maintenance will meet the <br /> requirements of established procedures, recognized consensus standards <br /> (AIHA, ANSI, MSHA, and NIOSH), and will comply in all respects to the <br /> requirements set forth in 20 CFR 1910.134; <br /> • All Site personnel will be required to wear hard hats, protective glasses and <br /> adequate hand protection when in the work zone; <br /> • Artificial Site illumination will be used if field activities need to be performed <br /> after daylight hours. <br /> • If needed, onsite generators, located outdoors in designated areas shall be <br /> used to supply power for electric tools and I or lighting. The electrical cords <br /> will be encased in appropriate jackets to prevent tearing and will be laid down <br /> in a pathway away from equipment or other onsite activities. The lighting <br /> shall be provided with approved explosion-proof elements and will be <br /> strategically stationed away from the areas of activities, yet provide adequate <br /> lighting.
