11 January 2007
AGE-NC Project No. 00-0769
2.4, INSTALLATION OF GROUND WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM
AGE anticipates that initiation of the proposed shallow and deep ground water extraction, treatment
and disposal system utilizing granular activated carbon vessels will retard the off-site migration of
dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons and fuel additive 1 ,2-DCA and reduce the overall hydrocarbon
mass prior to full-scale mitigation.
2.4. 1 . Well Pumps, Installation and Process Piping
It is anticipated that a Grundfos Rediflow down-well pump, type 5E5, equipped with a Franklin
/z-hp, 230V, 3-wire motor will be installed in the newly installed ground water extraction wells.
One-inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC piping will be installed from the pump discharge to the surface
with a safety chain to prevent dropping the pump to the well bottom. This pump is rated to remove
five-gallons of water per minute. To minimize sediment intake through the pump, the bottom of the
pump/motor assembly will be suspended approximately 2 feet from the extraction well bottom.
Electrical wiring will be connected from the top of the pump through Class I electrical
connectors/junction boxes and electrical conduit to the pump controller.
2.4.2. Well and Process Pump Controllers
Both the extraction well pumps will be controlled by a PumpTec controller; the well pumps will
operate on an independent controller. The pump will be controlled by an amperage sensing/time
control switch. This switch will detect a decrease of amperage when water level drops below the
impeller intake from the Grundfos pump.
The process pump, located "downstream" of the holding tank, will be controlled by electrode
switches placed at various levels in the holding tank. An emergency shut-off switch will be located
immediately below the top of the holding tank. An intermediate pump-on switch will be placed
approximately 8 inches below the emergency shut-off switch and activate the process pump.
Intermediate pump-off switches will be utilized near the bottom of the holding tank to turn the
process pump off.
2.4.3 Treatment System
One 300-gallon poly tank will be used to temporarily store extracted water prior to processing, As
indicated above, this tank will be equipped with various level control switches to control the rate at
which extracted water is introduced into the treatment vessels, to provide safety shutoff capabilities
Adimnced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
Er
I
