10 February 1993
(GeoAudit CV 43C5-1. 61)
TPH as gas was detected in samples B1-20 (93 pg/g) , B1-30 (6, 100
µg/g) and B1-40 (13 Ag/g) . Benzene, toluene and xylene were
detected in all samples except B1-60, at levels ranging from 0. 007
µg/g (xylene, B1-50) to 520 µg/g (toluene and xylene, B1-30) .
Ethylbenzene was detected in samples B1-20 (3 . 5 µg/g) , B1-30 (170
µg/g) and B1-40 (0. 37 Ag/g) .
PROCEDURES
According to the PHS/EHD, seasonal high depth to groundwater for
the Spring of 1986 was 45 - 50 feet. Therefore, based upon the
analytical results, the groundwater may have been impacted. A
groundwater investigation is warranted and a minimum of three
groundwater monitoring wells must be installed to determine flow
direction and gradient and to assess the condition of the
groundwater.
Details of the groundwater assessment are as follows:
. 1) Prepare a site health and safety plan in accordance with the
Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous
Waste Site Activities - Prepared by National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, U. S. Coast Guard and U. S. Environmental
Protection Agency, October 1985.
2) Notify the EHD 48 hours prior to commencement of any work.
3) Drill three (3) vertical borings to a depth of 70 feet
utilizing a hollow-stem auger drill rig. The estimated boring
locations are depicted on Figure 2 .
4) Decontaminate sampling equipment in a tri-sodium phosphate
solution (TSP) and rinse twice with water prior to each
sampling run.
5) Preserve soil samples in the lead brass tube by covering both
ends with aluminum foil, capping, and sealing with tape.
6) Label and log soil samples on a chain-of-custody form.
7) Store samples under ice pending delivery to a state-certified
laboratory.
• 8) Monitor auger returns and soil sample duplicates for the
presence of volatile organics using a photo-ionization
detector (PSD) .
