Mr. Kyle Christie Project 20805-146.006
August 5, 1996
Page 8
Piping Excavation Soil Samples
TPHG and BTEX were detected in soil samples collected from the piping excavations.
Detected TPHG concentrations in soil samples collected beneath the piping at depths of 6
to 9 feet bgs ranged frorn 12,000 to 2,000 mg/kg, respectively. The benzene concentrations
ranged from 3 to 26 mg/kg. TPHG concentrations detected in soil samples collected
beneath the third set of piping were 3.1 to 72 mg/kg, and benzene concentrations ranged
from below method reporting limits to 0.23 mg/kg. In addition, soil sample P-6 collected
from the former dispenser location was tested for VOCs using USEPA Method 8010.
VOCs did not exceed method reporting limits. Soil samples were analyzed for MTBE.
Sample P-1 contained 28 mg/kg MTBE, and MTBE did not exceed method reporting
limits in other samples. See the table for analytical results and Appendix A for copies of
certified analytical reports.
Soil Stockpiles
Soil stockpile SP-1 contained approximately 360 cubic yards of soil generated from the
UST excavation, and stockpile SP-2 contained approximately 300 cubic yards of soil
generated during overexcavation of the former dispenser and piping areas. Soil stockpile
samples collected from stockpiles SP-1 and SP-2 were submitted to a state-certified
analytical laboratory, composited four to one by quadrant, and analyzed for TPHG, BTEX,
and MTBE. Analytical results indicated SP-1 contained total petroleum hydrocarbon
(TPH) concentrations of 260 rng/kg. Stockpile SP-2 contained average TPHG
concentrations of 818 mg/kg (see Appendix B). The analytical results for SP-2 were used
as baseline concentrations for the soil aeration program.
SOIL AERATION
Soil aeration was conducted in accordance with the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air
Pollution Control District (SJVUAPCD) regulations and the February 27, 1996, aeration
authorization letter. Based on the initial TPH concentration of 818 mg/kg cited in the
aeration approval letter (see Appendix B), the SJVUAPCD allowed aeration of 60 cubic
yards of soil on day 1 and daily additions of 60 cubic yards to the active aeration pile.
ACES began on-site aeration on Monday April 22, 1996, using a rubber tire loader to
spread soil. Aeration activities were completed on May, 2, 1996. Refer to Appendix B for
the soil aeration approval letter and soil aeration log.
SACN.\PJM805\08051460.6DS-951cjb:3
