h
' 12 February 1996
AGE-NC Project No 95-0121 _
' 23 SITE ASSESSMENT
Between May 1989 and December 1994, a total of ten soil bonngs and nine monitoring wells were
' drilled and installed at the site to assess the lateral and vertical extent of hydrocarbon-impacted soil
and ground water Details of the assessment of hydrocarbon-impacted soil and ground water were
included in the Corrective Action Plan (CAP) prepared by AGE in November 1995
2 4 GROUND WATER DEPTH AND FLOW DIRECTION
IGround water depth at the site has fluctuated from approximately 25 feet to approximately 33 feet
below, surface grade between 1991 and 1995 Ground water flow direction at the site has fluctuated
Ifrom northwest to southeast Current ground water flow direction is north-northeast
' 3.0. PROCEDURES
3 1 MONITORING WELL PURGE PROCEDURES
On 28 November 1995, a Solinst water level meter was used to measure the depth to ground water
in each monitoring well relative to the top of the well casing An Ullage interface probe was used to
measure free hydrocarbon product in wells MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3
I After measuring the ground water depth and free product thicknesses, each well was purged using
a 2-stage submersible purge pump Approximately 8 to 14 gallons (a minimum of 3 well volumes)
of water were removed from each well to stabilize temperature, pH and conductivity Stabilization
I parameters were measured at regular intervals using an ICM water analyzer Purged water was placed
in 55-gallon drums for temporary storage on-site Monitoring well stabilization data and field sheets
are included in Appendix A
3 2 - COLLECTION OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES
Ground water samples were collected from each well using new disposable bailers Immediately upon
retrieval, the samples were transferred into 40-m1 EPA vials preserved with hydrochloric acid and
Ione-liter amber bottles and transported in a chilled container to Western Environmental Science and
Technology (WEST) in Davis, California The samples, were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as `gasoline and diesel (TPH-g, TPH-d) and volatile organics (benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTE&X) in accordance with EPA methods 8015m and 602,
respectively
