' • k'q KLEINFELDER
3.2 ORGANIC VAPOR SCREENING AND CONFIRMATION SAMPLING
' The excavation activities will be observed by an experienced environmental geologist. The
geologist will classify the soil and collect soil samples to be submitted for analysis. Based on the
results of the soil borings, the soil is anticipated to be clay and silty clay. To provide a qualitative
indication of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil and to monitor the vapor concentrations in the
' breathing zone of the field crew, a portable organic vapor analyzer (OVA) equipped with a
photoionization detector (PID) will be used to screen the samples in the field. The OVA
measures total ionizable compounds in parts per million by volume (ppmv) relative to a
calibration standard.
The direction and extent of the excavation will be based on organic vapor readings, visual
observations, surface obstructions and the limits of the excavation equipment. The excavation
will be continued as long as it appears that diesel associated with the fuel release is being
removed. This scope of work is not intended to address other issues that may be presented at the
' site. Confirmation soil samples will be collected from the bottom and sidewalls of the
excavation. Soil samples well be collected in clean brass tubes driven in to relatively
undisturbed soil collected in the excavator bucket. Kleinfelder personnel will not enter the
excavation to collect soil samples. Kleinfelder will collect a minimum of one confirmation soil
' sample for every 50 inplace cubic yards of soil excavated. At this time it is anticipated that eight
confirmation soil samples will be collected and analyzed.
' 3.3 SOIL DISPOSAL
' As the soil is removed from the excavation, it will be loaded directly into truck/trailers and
hauled to Forward Landfill in Stockton for disposal. Forward is a Class II/VI landfill and is
' approved to accept this type of material. Forward has pre-approved the acceptance of this
material based on the results of the soil boring assessment.
If soil appears to be "clean" in the field, it will be segregated and placed on and covered with
' plastic. Any soil stockpiled at the site will be assessed with confirmation stockpile sampling. If
the stockpiled soil is "clean", it will be returned to the excavation or disposed of in an
appropriate manner.
23-482276-B00ICR96S070 Page 5 of 8 June 26, 1996
Copyright 1996 Kleinfelder,Inc.
