septic tank, previously unknown, was also removed. An abandoned
12" pipeline discovered along west edge of property. Line was
empty; origin, use, & ownership unknown Laboratory results of
soil samples taken from bottom & side of excavation revealed the
presence of TPH, (EPA 418. 1 ; ) no other test was run_ No further
work was done - excavation left open. Refer to EXHIBIT C for
details of that test.
August, 1993 - Five (5) auger borings were placed in an attempt
to define the vertical & lateral extent of the contamination
The locations of the soil borings & other features are shown on
PLATE VI , from the Del-Tech report SB-1 went to 42' bgl,
positive readings were noted in all samples taken from 5' to
bottom when screened with a PID meter SB-2 & SB-3, both taken
to 32' bgl, also gave positive readings from 5' to bottom A
water sample taken from SB-3 also showed the presence of
hydrocarbon substances. SB-4, which was taken to 37' bgl,
recorded lower readings in samples from 10 ' to bottom SB-5,
which was taken to 37' , dial not show any evidence of
contamination_
Three (3) 15' deep hand-auger borings were placed in & adjacent
• to the open excavation in order to further define the contami-
nation. Their locations are shown on PLATE VI Hand boring #2,
at the west end of the leach field & next to the rock well,
revealed the presence of BTEX & TPH as diesel and motor oil; the
other two were non-detect. The 3 hand auger borings were: located
inside of the existing excavation, which had not yet been back-
filled- The depth of that pit is not given in the report
covering that activity; it is assumed to be approximately 10'
deep. If that is true, then the hand augers reached a vertical
depth of approximately 25' below ground surface. Lithologic
plots of the five auger holes are included as PLA'T'ES VII t.hru XI
The results of the laboratory analyzes are summarized on TABLE I .
For copies of the laboratory analyzsis sheets & custody chains,
and a a more complete discussion of the results of this work,
refer to the report titled "SOIL BORING & TESTING REPORT" dated
12/8/1993 , prepared by Del-Tech Geotechnical Support Services &
Geological Technics, Inc.
Novembpr. 1993 - Two soil samples were taken from the bottom of
the open excavation 5' & 10 ' west of the second chamber of the
concrete septic tank by an employee of Independent Trucking The
samples were taken using a clean stainless steel hand held auger
equipped with brass sample tubes and driving the auger about 12"
into the soil . The samples were analyzed for TEPH, (EPA 3540/
8015M, ) for kerosene, diesel , & motor oil . The east sample was
below detection limits; the west sample measured 20 mg/kg of
TEPH, characteristic of motor oil./weathered diesel. A copy of
that laboratory report is attached as EXHIBIT D.
4
