site on September 13 , 1996 The location for this monitoring
' well, identified as MW-9 on PLATE IV, had been previously marked
by personel from Wm J Hunter & Associates, and the immediate
area cleared to allow access for the drilling equipment
' Drilling began at 0930 hours, surface sediments consisted of
pieces of asphalt, brown to dark brown clay, & gravels, probably
made land At a depth of 51 , a clean core barrel containing 3 ,
' 21" x 6" metal tubes was lowered into the auger flights and driven
from 5 " to 6 ' 6" using a drive hammer The core was retreived,
laid on a clean surface, and carefully opened by the geologist
' One of the tubes was promptly sealed by covering the ends with
teflon tape & plastic caps, and thoroughly sealing with duct
tape The tube was clearly labeled and placed on ice in a sealed
' chest The remainder of the core was examined and the lithology
and other features were entered on a field log There was a odor
similar to "old" gasoline or sewage
'
Additional cores were taken at 101 , 15 ' , and 20 " in the same
manner The cores had a definite petroleum odor, and vi.sable
discoloration The core barrel was thoroughly decontaminated
with Alconox & clean water between each use After retrieving
the last core from 201 -211611 , the augers were advanced to 35 " bgl
preparatory to running casing. Refer to PLATE VIIID for details
of blow counts, lithology and other pertinent data
21' OD, schedule 40 flush screw threaded casing was run 35
feet The bottom was fitted with a threaded solid cap,
p, macc
hine
' cut slotted screen ( 02011 ) extended from bottom to 15 feet, the
top 10 feet was blank The annular space between the auger
flights and the casing was filled with #2/12 SRI washed &
screened sand, a weighted tape was used to check for sand height
Auger flights were slowly withdrawn as needed while placing the
sand When sand had reached 13 feet, (2 " above the top of the
screen, ) 1/2 bag of bentonite chips was placed on top and wetted
to insure a competent seal After withdrawing the remainder of
the augers, the casing was cut off and a metal surface vault was
installed The annular space from the bentonite seal to the
surface was filled with a cement slurry which had been thoroughly
mixed in a hopper and displaced with a flexible hose The top of
the casing was fitted with a locking cap, and the vault sealed
with a metal traffic cover PLATE IXD is a schematic of the well
completion Drill solids and unused core material wer placed in
metal drums and stored at 1145 W. Charter Way for temporary
storage
Preserved soil samples were transported under chain of custody to
Sherwood Labs with instructions to analyze for BTEX (EPA 8020, )
7
