26 September 2005
AGE-NC Project No. 05-1329
DRILLING AND SAMPLE COLLECTION
On 09 September 2005,three soil probe borings(131 through 133)were advanced at the site as part
of the assessment activities. The field work was conducted as outlined in the AGE-prepared Phase
HLimited Subsurface Investigation Work Plan, dated 30 August 2005.
The soil probe borings were advanced utilizing a van-mounted Geoprobe 5400, equipped with
1.25-inch diameter probe rods with an attached 1.50-inch diameter soil sampler, using a hydraulic
hammer to drive the soil sampler to the specified depths. The three soil borings were advanced
vertically to depths of 25 feet below surface grade (bsg). The proposed fourth soil boring in the
eastern portion of the site was not advanced due to equipment blocking the locations access and the
field observations indicating a clean soil boring location B2.
During the boring operation, soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals, beginning at 5 feet bsg,
to the total depth of each boring. Each sample was collected utilizing a 1.50-inch Geoprobe soil
sampling assembly loaded with four six-inch brass sleeves. After collection, the ends of the second
brass sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The sleeve was labeled
with soil probe boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials and then placed in a chilled
container.
The soil from one of the three remaining sleeves was field-screened for the presence of volatile
organic compounds, using organic vapor meter(OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector
(PID: Thermo Environmental 580; 10.0 eV; calibrated to isobutylene). Soils encountered in the
borings were also visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS). Soil boring logs are provided in Appendix A.
EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION/BORING ABANDONMENT
Prior to sample collection, the Geoprobe soil and ground water sampling equipment was tipple rinsed
with clean water after being washed with a solution of Alconox. In addition, the Geoprobe rods were
thoroughly cleaned prior to soil probe boring advancement.
Following soil a nd ground water sample collection, all soil boring locations were abandoned by
backfilling with portland cement from the total depth to surface grade.
ANALYTICAL METHODS
Soil samples were transported under chain of custody to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratories
Advanced GeoEnvironmcntal,Inc
