Ms. Carol Oz
August 12, 1999 ' Project 791700
Page 4
UST excavation
A total of ten soil samples were collected from the UST excavation. Six soil samples
were collected from the base of the of the UST excavation and four soil samples from the
sidewalls of the UST excavation (see Figure 2). Pinnacle personnel collected soil from the
excavator bucket by removing 3 to 6 inches of soil and driving a brass sample tube into
the remaining soil. The sample tube was sealed with Teflon° tape and plastic end caps,
labeled, and placed in an iced cooler for transport to a state-certified analytical laboratory
with chain-of- custody documentation.
Piping and dispenser samples
Soil underlying and adjacent to the former product line trenches and dispensers consisted
of dark brown and dark gray sandy silt to clayey silt (with lenses of black organics) to
depths of approximately 3 to 5 feet bgs. Slight petroleum hydrocarbon odors were present
in samples PL-1, PL-6 and D-2. In les D-
addition, high PID levels were observed in samples
7 and D-8. p
Twelve compliance samples (PL-1 through PL-12)were collected from soil underlying the
fiberglass product piping at approximately 20 linear foot spacing and at depths of 3.5 to 5
feet below grade (see Figure 2). Seven compliance samples (D-1 through D-7/8) were
collected from beneath dispensers at depths of five to seven feet bgs (see Figure 2).
Sampling procedures were consistent with those described above.
Localized overexcavation to 7 feet bgs was at sample locations PL-1, PL-6, and D-7/8.
Overexcavation was conducted based upon strong hydrocarbon odor and high PID
readings.
Soil stockpile samples
Approximately 1,000 cubic yards of soil excavated from the UST excavation and piping
trenches were stockpiled on-site. Pinnacle sampled the stockpile (SP-1) at a frequency of
four samples per 100 cubic yards and submitted samples SP-1-A, -B, -C -D through
R, -S, -T for profile analysis. Samples from stockpile SP-1 were submitted to a sta e
certified laboratory for analysis for waste disposal parameters.
CP\E:\ARCO\2186\REPORTS\2186P105.DOC-951sg:1
[Kot61CQC
