Hinson
San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division
P.O. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
SUBJECT: Quarterly Groundwater Monitoring at the Safeway Meat
Processing Facility, Located at 1111 Navy Drive,
Stockton, California (Site Code 1194)
Dear Ms. Hinson:
On behalf of Safeway Xnc., ERM West collected groundwater samples
from monitoring wells MW-4, MW-5 and MW-6 at the Safeway facility
on Navy Drive on February 28, 1992 . The samples were analyzed for
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) by EPA Method 8015 (Modified)
and for Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes (BTEX) by EPA
Method 602 . Groundwater from MW-6 was also analyzed for total
Coliform Bacteria because of a nearby sewer line.
Laboratory analyses showed TPH concentrations of less than 1 part
per million (ppm) in MW-4 and MW-5. The TPH concentration in MW-6
was 1 .2 ppm. BTEX compounds were not found above the detection
limit in the groundwater from these wells. Less than one Colony
Forming Unit per 100 ml of sample was identified from the MW-6
sample analyzed for Total Coliform Bacteria.
Following well development and purging, water samples were obtained
by lowering a decontaminated Teflon bailer into the well . The
sample water was immediately transferred by gently pouring the
contents of the bailer into a clean volatile organic analysis (VOA)
vial, filling it completely. Care was taken to minimize any
agitation. of the water sample. The sample vial was then capped
with a Teflon septum cap such that zero headspace was achieved, and
no air bubbles were visible when turned upside-down.
i? Recycled Paper
