«i
Mr. Kelly Williamson
August 1, 1985
Page Two
A review of the drilling logs of all bora gs that have been made from
February 1985 to present have detailed the shape and size of the plume as
it exists within the confines of the station property, but the extent to
which the plume has extended to the southeast beyond the property line is
an unknown. A plot of the station, shows g the monitor well locations, is
attached and included on the drawing is the area encompassed by the plume
within the station .bounds, based on all iriformation available. The dotted
line beyond the property lines is only an estimate based on product volumes i
found in MW#10 and MW#13.
While reviewing the past drill logs it was noted that the groundwater level
has decreased from 29 feet on February 28, 1985, to 43 feet on July 26, 1985,
and groundwater direction has changed frequently.
I
Since this station is located in a highly agricultural area where large
I
quantities of groundwater are used for irrigation, it is most probable that
this trend of groundwater depletion will continue until the fall of the year.
With respect to the groundwater level decreasing, it would be a reasonable t
conclusion that the product is moving down deeper into the soil, thus slowing
the lateral expansion of the plume.
To address the phased product that is presently on the groundwater surface, j
it would be my recommendation that a recovery well be installed as soon as
possible and a groundwater depression pump used in conjunction with a hydro-
carbon recovery system to stablize the ever changing groundwater direction
at this location and begin recovery of t e lost product.
Once all the free product has been recovered, several alternatives can be
studied with regard to the reclamation of the effected soils and groundwater,
such as bioreclamation, air stripping and reinjection, carbon filtration or
a combination thereof.
I
Inasmuch as the groundwater is dropping at such a rapid rate, I would like to
recommend that the clean water discharge from the recovery system be placed
in the perculation pond that is in place at this location, due to the fact
that the perculation pond is located ovei a good area of the plume and the
;i
water would help to precipitate the product in the soil in that area down to
groundwater, enhancing the recovery effo t, and the groundwater would not be
further depleted.
Attached you will find a chart of the monitor well data for July 26, 1985,
which outlines the conditions found on that day.
Supplemental reports for this location will follow as new data is collected.
Ver truly,
J.
