1,
October 8, 1986
Mr. James C. Thompson
Kayo Oil Company t
Page -2-
concentrations that cause a build-up of mucus type growth, which must be
physically removed to keep theEl.air stripping tower operating effectively.
There have been several changes made to the air stripping tower to improve its
capacity and efficiency. On February 5, 1986 a second blower was added to the
system to increase the air volume by 1400 CFM, and on February 18, 1986, a
larger, higher pressure tower pump was installed to increase the nozzle pres-
sure and flow rate. The new tower pump has a capacity of 91 GPM at full flow,
but operates, as installed, at,pa maximum of 27 GPM at 39 P.S. I . The tower
pump is float controlled and operates only as required , depending on the water
level in the spray tower feed tank.
To date, 783,350 cu. feet of water (5,859,458 gallons) have passed through
the system. Total gasoline recovered to date is 592 gallons.
Groundwater monitoring has been conducted at this location on a weekly basis
to track the groundwater levels and any product thicknesses that may exist
in the monitor wells , and copies of this data are attached.
Proposed Activities :
It would be our recommendationthatthe air blowers on the air stripping tower
be replaced with the larger capacity 2,000 CFM. blowers (both upper and lower)
with 8 inch ducting, to provide more air flow within the tower, which will
improve the tower efficiency, and divert a Fortion of the system effluent into
the secondary discharge point,,,with the possible consideration to adding a
light surfactant to enhance the freeing of oil bound hydrocarbons .
And; to continue groundwater monitoring, as directed by Kayo Oil Company.
Please advise as to what changes in procedu a you desire.
Ver truly yours ,
James R.
