Oil Exploration and Production Wastes Initiative Proiect MethodolpAy <br />Sampling efforts for this initiative were primarily focused on the wastestreams <br />most prevalent in oil production, and therefore generated in the largest volumes. <br />The inclusion of wastestreams in the study was knftd by #* w=Ws avakbft <br />at the time of sampling. Smaller volume wastes associated with oil production <br />were included, where available. <br />For the purpose of this discussion, the wastestreams sampled during this project <br />have been categorized as produced water, drilling wastes, oily sludges, and foam <br />treatment waste. Due to limited waste volume, only two samples were obtained <br />of the latter wastestream. The sampling points for each wastestrearn varied <br />depending on the location of the facility and methods of disposal used, as shown <br />below: <br />PL9aMgW)agW1 samples were taken from holding tanks intended for <br />disposal into sewers, holding tanks for Class 11 injection wells, and from <br />pipelines leading to an irrigation canal, intended for agricultural use; <br />30��pits, after the liquid phase <br />���rom earthen drillinR <br />with cement <br />QilX,AWgO1 were collected from covered and vented production pits, thel <br />bottom of water holding tanks (that wasto is cQrnffumly refemd to sor *11 <br />bodam"), and *om a purnp ce#ar ftotqk, <br />• EgjEn treatme I Xgs1§Jtq was collected from the foam pumping equipment <br />during a foam treatment operation in process. <br />r-MIMUM-M-M =-- <br />Produced water is the wastestrearn generated in the largest amounts by the oil <br />production industry, at a ratio of 9:1 water to oil, according to information <br />supplied by industry representatives. The total volume of produced water <br />generated by oil production in California during 1995 is estimated to be <br />approximately 1,684,200,000 barrels (API, 2000). Produced water is co- <br />produced with crude oil and can be fresh or brackish, depending on the depth <br />and composition of the formation. The constituents of produced water will also <br />be determined by the characteristics of the formation, as water-soluble materials <br />in the formation may be present in the water. <br />The drilling waste therefore included cement as a component. <br />StqtgvOay. -, de, Compliance Division 02 <br />SM <br />
