M1
PACIFIC GAS• c
McDONALD ISLAND GAS STORAGE
OILMAIEj • • • •
Scope
This procedure provides guidelines for preventing harmful quantities of
hazardous substances from being discharged to the Oil -Water Separators
(OWS) at McDonald Island Gas Storage Facility.
Background
McDonald Island Gas Storage Facility includes the Turner Cut, Whiskey Slough,
and McDonald Island Platforms. Each platform has an OWS system that is
designed to collect non -hazardous runoff and wastewater drainage. The OWS
systems are located on ground level adjacent to the platforms and are connected
to the platforms via drainage piping.
The wastewater influent to the OWS may contain traces of oil & grease,
triethylene glycol, and soil sediments. The influent has been tested and
confirmed to be non -hazardous in accordance with Title 22 of the California
Code of Regulations. To maintain the exemption from hazardous waste
treatment regulations, it is necessary to ensure that the OWS influent remains
non -hazardous.
Under normal facility operating conditions, the non -hazardous nature of the
OWS influent is not expected to change. However, if a hazardous substance
release occurs on a platform which could reach the OWS via drainage piping,
the influent could be adversely affected. If the release causes the influent to
become hazardous, the OWS could not be operated until the hazardous
substance was removed.
Procedure
1. Platforms should be inspected in accordance with the inspection schedule
specified in the facility's Hazardous Material Business Plan.
