We will, however, follow your recommendation to
sample and analyze the borehole every five feet (5').
PHS/EHD also recommended sampling at changes in lithology in addition to the
five foot (5') borehole sampling. We would like clarification of what level of sampling
PHS/EHD believes is appropriate, since lithologies can change quite rapidly in the
sequence of fluvatile sediments under the site and thin lenses of sand within the upper
clay unit.
Our Figure 4, in the work plan submitted, shows the length of screen, slot size
and also states that we will be using a cristy box with a traffic cover. If you require a
verbal description as well, we submit that the slot size is .02 inches and the length of
the screen is 20 feet with five feet (5') of screen above the water table.
We will label all water and soils containers on the site.
We will perform analysis for total lead in soils and soluble lead in water. We
will analyze for soluble lead in soils, if any samples exceed 13 ppm in the initial
analysis.
WHF will notify your department by fax of any activities to be performed on
the site, 48 hours prior to the activity.
We will obtain pH, conductivity and temperature readings in the wells prior to
developing or sampling them, and include those results in future reports.
We will direct the laboratory to use EPA method 3510 for TPH-kerosene;
methods 5520 D and F for oil and grease in soils; 5520 C and F for oil and grease in
water.
WHF did not mention the destruction of Well #3 because during our last meet-
ing with Margaret Lagorio and Diane Hinson, we were told to leave it in place to
obtain gradient information. We realize that you were not present at that meeting and
may not have been informed of the situation. If you now want the well destroyed,
please let us know and we will comply with your request.
We have included an addendum regarding "soil status" for the previously
excavated soils. The addendum includes all information available on the site. No soils
have ever been removed from this site. As you know, much of the activity, on the site,
was performed prior to the site being entered into the oversight program. We hope the
