(Cambria). An aquifer test was initiated on October 21,2002 at a constant
pumping rate of 0.8 gallons per minute (gpm) and continued for 91.73 hours extracting from
monitoring well MW-4. All five groundwater samples collected before and during the test
from MW-4 contained high concentrations of methyl-tert butyl ether (DITBE). Cambria
calculated a mass of 3.33 pounds of MTBE was removed during the aquifer test. Based on
the test result, Cambria reported 0.7 gpm to be the sustainable pumping rate from MW-4.
The report included a recommendation to initiate a program of groundwater extraction for
one week, once per quarter. The extracted groundwater would be stored in a tank on site
and would later be transported by truck to the Shell refinery in Martinez for recycling.
Due to the persistent presence of high MTBE and increasing tert-butanol (TBA)
concentrations (table 1), the site is a Category "A" site for MTBE clean up and is a candidate
for source area interim remediation.
Table 1.
