(Cambria). Analytical results of methyl tertiary
butyl ether(MTBE) detected in the groundwater samples have continued to increase since
the monitoring wells were installed in November 1999, as shown on the table below. In
addition, tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) have recently
been detected in the groundwater analytical results. It is unknown at this time if the increase
of oxygenate concentrations in the groundwater samples is a result of the unauthorized
release from the four underground storage tanks (UST) which were removed in 1994, or
related to a different release source.
Table 1. Analytical results of MTBE in MW-1,MW-2 and MW 3 roundwater sam les:
12/07/1999 02/01/2060 04/26/2000 08/29/2000 11/20/2000 01/29/2001
MW-1 7523,100 6,250 10,200 14,000 9,800
MW-2 104 330 4,110 523 320 470
MW-3 16,990 17,800 10,300 16,100 18,000 12,000
Concentration units are micrograms per liter (µg/1)
Historical depth of groundwater elevation in the area as recorded in 1979 and published in
San Joaquin County Flood Control Lines of Equal Depth to Groundwater was between 40
feet below surface grade (bsg) and 50 feet bsg. Over the last seven sampling events,
measured depth to groundwater at the monitoring wells was between 46 feet bsg and 49 feet
bsg. No significant change in groundwater elevation has been observed concurrent to the
increase in oxygenate levels.
It should be noted that two USTs currently still exist at the site, which are not in service.
Although tank tests were conducted by Tanknology on June 8, 2001 on both USTs and
results were "pass," line and leak detector tests were not conducted.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Cam Services
