3.0 PROCEDURES
- f
1)Notify San Joaquin EHD at least 48 hours prior to field work:-
2)Drill one vertical boring to a minimum depth of 45 feet below grade using a hollow-stem auger.'
drilling rig. Terminate the boring at 'the groundwater interface or when no hydrocarbon
contamination is evident, whichever is shallower.
r
3)Collect discrete soil samples at 5-foot intervals,using a California modifiedsplit-spoon sampler
loaded with three 6" brass sample sleeves. F
4}Preserve the bottom sleeve by covering-the ends with aluminum foil or teflon sheets,.capping, and
sealing with duct tape.-Place samples in a cooled ice
chest..,-v .:
P onization5 Screenthe middle sample for the presence of organic vapors usingaortable
r
detector(PID)and record the measurement on-the boring log..`
6)Extrude the middle and upper sleeves and record the sample descriptions on the boring log in
accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. w
7)Decontaminate the sampling equipment between samples.
8)Place auger returns on plastic sheeting pending laboratory analysis.
E
9)If groundwater is encountered, use a hydropunch sampling device to collect a groundwater sample.
Place sample in sterilized 40-m1 vials and 1-liter amber bottles and store in ice chest.
10)Use a water level meter to measure the depth to groundwater.
11)Backfill.the boring with cement grout from total depth to suOlace. ii ,
s
12)Transmit the samples to astate-certified envirronmental lab oratory'for analysis of the following:
Total petroleum hydrocarbons in the gasoline range(EPA 8015m/5030)
Total petroleum hydrocarbons in the diesel range(EPA 8015m13550)
Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene(EPA 8020) ;
aB
13) Submit a written report describing the investigation and presenting the results to E1=ID. The report
will be signed by-a registered California geologist. if
