-Gasoline Operations-
The safety measures described in this section relate principally to a kiosk fuel center, as a
facility that provides only gasoline.
I. Protective Clothing. Personnel should be encouraged to wear protective clothing as
needed at their facility. Recommended types of protective of clothing and possible
applications include:
• Shoes with slip-resistant soles for general use around the fueling center.
• Gloves for handling sharp objects
• Clothing with smooth edges and a proper fit; attendants should avoid wearing clothes
that can catch on equipment, such as clothing that is loose or has ragged edges.
If the skin comes into contact with caustic substances despite the use of protective
clothing, the following procedures should be followed:
• Clothing that becomes soaked with gasoline or oil immediately, but only in an area or
room with good ventilation and no source of ignition; wash the exposed skin thoroughly.
• Alcohol-type antifreeze solutions contain methanol (methyl-alcohol), a poison
commonly known as wood alcohol, which may cause serious illness, blindness, or death
if ingested or cause severe dermatitis of the skin; wash methanol immediately off the skin
and use an hand cream to restore the skin's oil; never ingest methanol.
• If battery acid, break fluid, or other caustic solutions touch the skin, flush the area with
water for at least five minutes; if the liquid contacts the eye, flush the eye with lukewarm
water for at least fifteen minutes; contact a physician immediately.
II. Emergency Shutdown Switches. All fueling centers have an emergency shutdown
switch that is located on the front of the kiosk.
• All attendants are to understand the purpose and location of the emergency shutdown
switches and are familiar with their operation.
• In fueling centers that frequently have shifts where only one attendant is on duty, an
emergency shutdown switch should be located within reach of the attendant's positions at
the cash register.
Section 3-1
