s
r
III. Portable Fire Extinguishers. At least one fire extinguisher in the fueling area
should have a minimum Underwriter's Laboratories classification of BC (extinguishers
purchased before June 1969 that have a lesser classification are acceptable if they are
properly maintained). The extinguisher should be located within fifty feet of all fuel-
dispensing pumps, underground tank pipe openings, and tank vents.
IV. Receiving and Storing Fuels. It is important to control all sources of ignition when
handling a petroleum product. Underground tanks for storing gasoline, buried under two
feet of earth or the equivalent, are protected against fires that may occur over them.
However, fires can occur at the fill pie, gauge pipe, tank vent, or at that location of spills
from tank overflows. These fires can be extinguished promptly using hand-held fire
extinguishers.
When gasoline is being delivered into a fueling center storage tank while the station
is operating, the fueling center attendant should follow certain procedures:
• Verify that the product is being delivered into the correct tank.
• Have the driver stay in the vicinity of the transport flow valve while the product is
flowing into the storage tank.
• Before the product is pumped from the tank, have the operator check the Veeder-Root
readings to verify the proper tank will received the proper amount of product.
• Make sure driver replaces the fill and gauge caps.
• Do not let the driver move the tank wagon until all hoses are disconnected and all
valves are closed.
Ensures that delivery vehicles comply with applicable regulations with respect to vapor
recovery and overfill shutdown devices.
V. Fill Caps and Covers. Gauge and fill caps should be plainly marked to indicate the
product and grade. This minimizes the possibility of delivering a product into the wrong
tank and is especially helpful when the station attendant is not on duty.
• Attendants should always ensure that fill caps and covers are flush with the paved
surface; replace caps moved or pealed up from snow plows or street cleaners.
VI. Inventory Control. PAQ, Inc. utilizes and monitors an electronic inventory system.
Accurate inventory records are maintained and reconciled daily on all gasoline tanks.
This approach is used to check the integrity of underground storage tanks and connecting
pipes. The Veeder-Root has been installed at all fueling centers, which is capable of
detecting potential leaks throughout the entire fuel system. This system constantly
measures the fluid levels in the underground fuel tanks.
Section 3-2
