Food Express, Inc.
Class "C" Fires- Occur in electrical equipment and use of water on an electrical fire can cause
electrocution. CO2-type extinguishers are effective on a class C fire and the fog created by their
use will disappear. BC-type and ABC-type extinguishers are also effective, however, they will
leave a powder residue on the equipment. Caution: The gas produced by CO2 extinguishers is
extremely cold and, if it comes in contact with skin, will cause burns.
Class D" Fires- Occur in combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium,
lithium, and potassium and can be extinguished utilizing special extinguishing agents approved
by recognized testing laboratories.
Care and Use of Extinguishers
- Always store extinguishers as close as possible to the hazard they are intended to control
- Extinguishers are to be kept charged at all times and must be inspected by an outside
source on an annual basis.
- In addition to the annual inspection, monthly in-house inspections must take place. Care
should be taken to insure that all pins, tags and gauges are intact and in good repair.
- Extinguishers will be mounted on the wall;extinguishers weighing in excess of 40 pounds
will be mounted no higher than three and a half feet from the floor; extinguishers
weighing less than 40 pounds will be mounted no higher than five feet from the floor.
Additional Safeguards
Special care must be taken to insure that flammable materials are stored properly. All gasoline,
thinners, paints, etc., will be stored in metal cans with a tight lid. Only cans designed to store
flammable liquids and prevent explosions and accidental spills are to be used. Following
additional safeguards that are to be adhered to are:
- Whenever possible, keep flammable liquids and paints in closed storage cabinets, closets
orlockers
- Keep all flammable liquids away from sparks, heat and open flames
- Compressed oxygen and gas cylinders must be secured. Cylinders must be capped and
stored away from heat, sparks and open flames
- Oxygen, though itself nonflammable, is essential to combustion. Never refer to oxygen as
air, nor use oxygen from cylinders to eliminate dust and dirt.
- Always dispose of product cartons in an appropriate manner
! - Always follow manufacturer's instructions when using welding equipment, torches, hoses
and electrical devices
- Flammables are never to be stored in glass containers
Medical Emergencies
Planning ahead for medical emergencies is an important factor in assisting those in need of
medical intervention. Following are some guidelines:
- Emergency phone numbers should be posted next to each telephone and include
ambulance,hospital,fire department and police
- It is advisable to have several employees on each shift trained in CPR and first aid.
8
