' Mr Harlin Knoll Environmental
27 January 2000 Resources
Page 2 Management
' measurements and collected samples from monitoring wells for analysis
of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g), benzene, toluene,
' ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) compounds, and methyl tertiary-butyl
ether (MTBE) The results of these sampling events indicated that
elevated concentrations of TPH-g and BTEX compounds were present in
groundwater immediately downgradient of each former UST location
Figures 1 and 2 (Attachment A) present the monitoring well locations in
the vicinity of UST 1 and UST 2, respectively
Based on this data, the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB)
1 indicated that the concentration of compounds in shallow groundwater
at each UST location presented an unacceptable health risk at the site
' The County and RWQCB requested that Heinz evaluate potential
remedial technologies for reducing the concentration of compounds
(specifically benzene) in groundwater in the vicinity of the former tank
' locations
Therefore, potential remediation technologies for cherrucals in
groundwater at the site were evaluated ERM, on behalf of Heinz,
submitted the Investigation Results Report (ERM, 13 April 1999) This
' report presented the results of sampling performed and an evaluation of
several potential remedial technologies based on the analytical results
This report concluded that oxygen-releasing compound (ORC) injection
' was the most suitable technology for remediating chemicals in
groundwater at the site A Workplan for performing ORC injection was
also included in this report
ERM performed ORC injection in the vicine of UST 1 and UST 2 during
l Y g
the week of 7 June 1999 The ORC injection activities are summarized in
a letter to the County dated 14 July 1999 Following ORC injection,
groundwater sampling was conducted at the site to evaluate chemical
concentrations in groundwater Groundwater sampling events were
i conducted on 30 June, 2 September, and 28 October 1999, prior to the
current sampling event
CURRENT GROUNDWATER SAMPLING RESULTS
Groundwater samples were collected from six monitoring wells at the
site during the current sampling event on 6 January 2000 The
groundwater samples were analyzed for TPH-g (USEPA Method 8015) ,
and BTEX (USEPA Method 8020) The groundwater sampling analytical
