. 3,000 gallons in volume No surface expression of these tanks was observed
during the site reconnaissance One of the tanks is reportedly located outside
of the production area, immediately west of the plant building The other
tank is reportedly located in the tomato flume area These tanks were
reportedly taken out of service in the 1960s and were subsequently filled with
sand
4. Hazards of Known or Expected Chemicals of Concern
Based on previous data collected from soil investigations at the site associated
with UST removals, and the contents of the USTs and ASTs which will be
investigated for this workplan, the suspected chemical hazards of concern at
the Heinz Tracy site include unidentified VOCs, and gasoline These
materials may exist in the surface soil and/or as chemicals of concern in
subsurface soil and water
Volatile Organic Compounds Most VOCs, except those known to be
carcinogenic, exhibit similar hazard effects in humans Effects on the
central nervous and upper respiratory systems as well as skin irritation
predominate Therefore, although a summary of the hazards of the
identified VOCs are listed separately below, additive effects of the mixture
will be taken into consideration when determining established action
levels
12-dichloroethene 12-DCE . This compound, due to its chemical
similarity to 1,1,-DCE, is a suspect human carcinogen In high
concentrations, it has produced liver and kidney injury in experimental
animals The current OSHA PEL is listed as 200 ppm
Trichloroethylene (TCE). TCE is a mildly toxic VOC that is also an
experimental carcinogen, tumorigen and teratogen It can cause eye
effects, hallucinations and distorted perceptions when inhaled TCE is an
eye and severe skin irritant Inhalation can cause narcosis, headache and
drowsiness Chronic exposure can cause Iiver and other organ damage
The current OSHA PEL is listed as 25 ppm as an eight hour TWA
Acetone. Acetone is a skin and severe eye irritant By inhalation, nasal
effects, eye irritation, respiratory system effects, nausea and vomiting, and
muscle weakness have been reported However, in industry, no injurious
effects have been reported other than skin irritation resulting from its
defatting action The current OSHA PEL is listed as 750 ppm
2
