(AGE), on your behalf for the above-referenced site.
The EHD had directed the submittal of a well destruction work plan by letter dated 31 October
2012.
In the work plan, AGE proposes to destroy monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6,
MW-7, soil vapor extraction wells SVE-4 and SVE-5, and ozone sparge wells OZ-2 and OZ-3 by
pressure grouting; and MW-2, MW-8, SVE-1, SVE-2, SVE-3, OZ-1 and OZ-4 by removing the
well components by over-drilling the wells. Although it is unclear whether AGE proposes to
pressure grout or over-drill MW-9, the EHD approves this well to be pressure grouted since
contaminants of concern have not been detected in any soil or groundwater samples collected
from MW-9.
The San Joaquin County Well Standards require over-drilling and removing well contents as the
method of destruction if the well is in an area of known or suspected contamination. The EHD
has reviewed the site soil data to determine if the wells proposed for destruction by pressure
grouting qualify for that destruction method. The EHD determined that the following wells
qualify for destruction by pressure grouting: MW-1, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6, MW-7, MW-9, SVE-4,
SVE-5, and OZ-2.
The remaining wells: MW-2, MW-3, MW-8, SVE-1, SVE-2, SVE-3, OZ-1, OZ-3 and OZ-4, have
either impacted groundwater or are located in an area of known or suspected contamination.
These wells must be destroyed by removal of the well contents prior to grouting from the bottom
upward using a tremie pipe.
