8020 / 3 <br />4.5 GC columns: <br />Column 1: 6 -ft x 0.082 -in. I.D. #304 stainless steel or glass <br />tubing. Packed with 5% SP -1200 ¢ 1.75% Bentone 34 on 100/120 mesh <br />Supelcoport. <br />Column 2: 6 -ft x 0.1 --in. I.O. #304 stainless steel or glass tubing <br />packed with 5% 1,2,3-tris(2-cyanoethoxy)propane on 60/80 mesh <br />Chromosorb W -AW. <br />4.6 Detector: Photoionization (PID). <br />4.7 Syringes: 5 -ml glass hypodermic with Luerlok top (2 each). <br />4.8 Microsyringes: 10, 25, 100 pl. <br />4.9 Two-way syringe valve with Luer ends (3 each). <br />4.10 Syringe: 5 -ml, gas-tight with shutoff valve. <br />4.11 Bottle: 15-m1 screw -cap, with teflon cap liner. <br />5.0 Reagents <br />5.1 Activated carbon: Filtrasorb 200 (Calgon Corp.) or equivalent. <br />5.2 Organic -free water: Generated by passing tap water through a <br />carbon filter bed containing about 1 lb of activated carbon. A water pur- <br />ification system (Millipore Super -Q or equivalent) may be used to generate <br />organic -free deionized water. Organic -free water may also be prepared by <br />boiling water for 15 min. Subsequently, while maintaining the temperature <br />at 90' C, bubble a contaminant -free inert gas through the water for 1 hr. <br />5.3 Stock standard solutions: Stock standard solutions can be prepared <br />from pure standard materials or purchased as certified solutions. Prepare <br />stock standard solutions in methyl alcohol using assayed liquids. Because of <br />the toxicity of many of the compounds being analyzed, primary dilutions of <br />these materials should be prepared in a hood. A NIOSH/MESA-approved toxic <br />gas respirator should be used when the analyst handles high concentrations of <br />such materials. <br />5.3.1 Place about 9 ml of methyl alcohol into a 10-m1 ground- <br />glass -stoppered volumetric flask. Allow to stand about 10 min or until <br />all alcohol -wetted surfaces have dried. Weigh the flask to the nearest <br />0.1 Mg. <br />5.3.2 Using a 100-p1 syringe, immediately add an amount of assayed <br />reference material to the flask, then reweigh.
