Fact Sheet 1904 Charter Way, Stockton March 2011 Pg 2
Proposed Cleanup Activity
To expedite the cleanup of groundwater, Oxychem plans to provide food to existing groundwater
microorganisms to enable them to degrade the contaminants. This will be accomplished by adding
Hydrogen Releasing Compound® (HRC) to groundwater at the eastern edge of the site where most
of the groundwater pollutants are found (Figure 1). HRC contains lactate, which provides the
carbon source that indigenous microbes need in order to degrade the pollutants into carbon dioxide,
chloride, and dinitrogen gas.
Recent pilot studies and environmental remediation projects have demonstrated that in situ
microbiological degradation works, and groundwater cleanup can occur more quickly as a result.
The insim microbiological remediation being proposed consists of a phased approach implemented
over the next two years. Phase I of the program will be implemented in early 2011. Site
monitoring wells will be sampled to evaluate remediation progress. When groundwater monitoring
confirms that the remediation approach is effective, then Phase 11 will be proposed and the
treatment area will be expanded to include additional areas where contaminants of concern are
present in groundwater.
Regional Water Board Oversight Process
The Central Valley Water Board provides regulatory oversight of the investigation and cleanup
activities. The Central Valley Water Board works with OxyChem and its consultants to identify
pollutants and to clean up the site. It also provides public access to all site documents and
correspondence.
Next Steps
If you have any questions or concerns about the proposed in situ microbiological remediation,
please contact Ms. Amy Terrell of the Central Valley Water Board, or Oxychem's consultant,
Ms. Kristene Tidwell of The Source Group as indicated below by April 4, 2011.
For Further Information: If you have questions or comments about this case, you may contact
Central Valley Water Board project manager Amy Terrell at (916) 464-4680 (E-mail
aterrell(a),waterboards ca goy), or Oxychem's consultant with The Source Group, Inc., Kristene
Tidwell at 925-944-2856 Ext 336 (Email ktidwell@thesourcearoun net).
You may also access site information and site documents at the Geotracker intemet site at
http://geotracker.waterboards ca.gov/.
