GEOMATRIX
Soil borings will be advanced using the methods described in the "Drilling and Destruction of
Soil Borings" (Appendix Q.
' Soil samples will be collected using the methods described in the "Soil Sampling for Chemical
Analysis" (Appendix Q.
' Soil samples will be transported under chain of custody procedures and will be analyzed by a
California certified laboratory for nitrate, TKN, and AN using the following methods:
• Nitrate as N, EPA 300;
' • Ammonia as AN, EPA 351.2;
' • TKN, EPA 350.3M.
' All soil samples will be extracted for the above nitrogen analysis. Initially, only the two
shallowest soil samples from each boring within the "foot prints" of the former tank farms will
be analyzed. If additional analysis of deeper soil samples are needed to evaluate the depth of
elevated nitrogen concentrations (greater than background) (Bradford, et al, 1996) in a
particular boring, Geomatrix will request that the laboratory analyze the deeper sample extracts
from that boring.
' 5.3 SITE ASSESSMENT REPORT
After the soil assessment has been completed and the laboratory analytical results have been
' received for the soil samples, Geomatrix will prepare a site assessment report. The report will
summarize the field and laboratory methods used and the results of field and laboratory
measurements. The report will include a map showing sample locations and laboratory
analytical results. The report will evaluate the characterization results for the lateral and
vertical extent of elevated nitrogen concentrations in the soil below the HCC facility. It may
recommend additional assessment of soil, depending upon the assessment results.
6.0 PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE
The soil assessment described above can be initiated upon receiving the EHD's approval of this
work plan and obtaining the necessary site assessment permits from San Joaquin County. Field
assessment activities can be initiated with 2 to 3 weeks of receiving the EHD's approval and
will require approximately 1 day of drilling activity. Laboratory analytical results should be
' \\ff2\deptdate\PROJECnC5193\5193.001\5193.001-SAWP.dm 5
