6-20-8, N-phuric 15/49, and No. 3 tanks contained UN-32. When these structures were GEOMATRIX
' removed, the facility employees noted that there was no visible indication of leakage under the
liner materials.
5.1 HEALTH AND SAFETY
' In order to protect the field assessment workers, health and safety precautions need to be
addressed. Prior to initiating field assessment activities, Geomatrix has prepared a Health and
Safety Plan for field workers and will obtain drilling permits from San Joaquin County. Level
' D personal protective equipment (including protective gloves) will be required, unless volatile
emission of ammonia or organic chemicals is detected. A copy of the Health and Safety Plan is
' included in Appendix B.
' 5.2 SOIL ASSESSMENT
In order to evaluate the lateral and vertical extent of potential nitrogen migration in the soil at
the HCC facility, Geomatrix proposed to complete 18 exploratory soil borings at the facility
(borings S-1 through S-18, Figure 2). Soil boring locations were selected using the following
criteria:
• One location on-site expected to represent background nitrogen concentrates.
• Areas of nitrogen fertilizer storage (within the "footprints" of the former bulk liquid
' fertilizer tank farms).
• Areas of previous nitrogen detection in the surface soil samples (adjacent to the
former tank farm areas).
Each soil boring will include samples collected from approximately 0 to 6 inches below ground
surface (bgs), 1 to 1.5 feet bgs, 3 to 3.5 feet bgs, and 5 to 5.5 feet bgs.
Soil borings will be extended using the push probe method and soil samples will be collected in
brass tubes. Prior to advancing each soil boring, the drilling and sampling equipment will be
' steam cleaned. Soil cuttings will be temporarily stored in drums for future disposal by HCC.
Soil assessment methods will be consistent with the following protocols:
Soil borings will be advanced using the methods described in the "Drilling and Destruction of
Soil Borings" (Appendix Q.
' Illlldeptdam\PROJEMC519315193.00115193.001-SAWP.dw 4
