REVISED MONITORING AND REPORTING PROGRAM NO. 93-701 - 3 -
GEWEKE LAND DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
SOIL SAMPLING
Quarterly, one soil boring will be drilled near EW1 and three soil borings will be drilled in the
concentrated inoculated area, which may also be described as the area bounded by the air blower
system (See attached Figure 1). A minimum of four borings will be drilled each quarter. The
initial round of borings will be approximately three feet from the inoculation points. Upon
evidence of activity of the inoculated bacteria, the following round of soil borings will be drilled
an additional three feet from the previous round of borings.
Borings will be drilled with a hollow-stem auger drill rig. Drilling will consist of continuous
coring with continuous detailed logs of the geological strata. Coring will extend to the surface of
the water table. Soil samples will be collected for analysis beginning at the upper edge of the
contaminated zone, at all changes in lithology, at the top of the capillary fringe, and just above
the surface of the water table. Cone penetrometer technology may be used to replace soil borings
where applicable. The Board shall be notified five days in advance of any drilling.
With prior notification of the Board and adequate justification, selected samples, rather than all,
may be approved for submittal to the laboratory for analyses. After several rounds of monitoring
have been reviewed, the sampling schedule may be modified, at the discretion of the Board.
Table 4: Sampling for Biological Activity in Soil
Type of Sampling Sample Analytical
Constituents Units Sample Freouency Location Method
Purgeable Aromatic Organics mg/kg Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above EPA Method 8020
TPH as Gasoline mg/kg Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above LUFT Method GCFID
Bacterial Composition Genera Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above Various Methods
Bacterial Numbers cells/mg Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above Various Methods
Nitrate mg/kg Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above TCLP/EPA 300
Nitrite mg/kg Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above TCLP/EPA 300
Phosphate mg/kg Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above TCLP/EPA 300
pH ---- Driven Tube Quarterly Described Above ----
REPORTING
Existing monitoring locations are shown in Figure 1. Prior to construction, plans and
specifications for soil borings, ground water monitoring, injection, and extraction wells, and
air/vapor monitoring, injection, and extraction wells/points shall be submitted to Board staff for
review and approval.
Once appropriate permitting requirements have been met, the Board shall be notified five days
prior to implementation of supplementary remedial activities, including addition of distilled
water to soil to improve bacterial mobility, discharge of treated ground water to the surface or
subsurface, and addition of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, to the subsurface.
