VWl
has a sandy layer from about 20 to 30 feet in depth and a clay layer below the sand. The
lithology will allow comparison of bacterial movement and activity in sandy and clayey soils.
Bacteria were inoculated to a depth of 40 feet.
Thirty days into the Pilot Study, one boring will be drilled approximately 5 feet north of VWl.
The boring will be logged continuously and soil samples will be collected at changes in lithology
down to 35 feet. The boring will be terminated in the clay layer. More borings will be installed
if necessary. After 60 days into the Pilot Study, at least one more boring will be drilled. It will
be placed approximately 5 feet from VWl, and near the previous boring and will be drilled to
ground water and sampled at changes in lithology. According to information obtained from the
other borings, another boring may be drilled approximately 10 feet from VWl and 5 feet from
the other borings. Soil in this boring will be sampled as in the other borings. If drilling and
analyses indicate, other borings will be drilled farther from the inoculated wells.
At changes in lithology, the soil samples will be collected for laboratory analysis of TPHg,
BTEX, bacterial counts, and bacterial composition.
