Geweke Pilot Study
3 1 March 1994
Program B
Monitoring under Program A has detected impacts to ground water by inoculated bacteria in
MW4 and/or MW14. Using the data collected in Program A, a correlation has been established
between increasing CO2 and decreasing 02 levels and the presence of bacteria. Because of the
necessary to analyze for bacterial count and composition.
correlation, CO2 and 02 levels indicate the presence of introduced bacteria, it is no longer, it is necessary to expand the
However
ground water monitoring to include additional wells farther from the inoculation sites. However, using the data collected in Program A, no correlation may be
made between increases in CO2 and decreases in 02 levels and the presence of bacteria.
Therefore, we need to monitor both CO2 and 02 levels and bacterial numbers and composition.
In addition, hydrocarbons will be monitored because bacteria may have been operating long
enough to be able to detect a difference in hydrocarbon concentrations.
Muifadnfl Points Cmtituents
Sample FreWiency
MW4 and MW14
DO, CO2, bacterial Mondays and Thursdays
counts and composition
BTEX, TPHg, EPA601 Twice Monthly
EWl and MW5 DO, CO2, bacterial Mondays and Thursdays
counts and composition
SOIL GAS/VAPOR MONITORING FOR THE PILOT STUDY
In order to monitor a variety of airlbacteria permutations, we decided to turn off the air blower
line to some of the wells. The air blower system is set up so that there are two main supply
lines. One line supplies VW4, VWS, VW6, MW4, MW5, and MW14. The other line supplies
VWI, VW2, VW3. VW7, and MW3, the air supply to this line was turned off. Bacteria were
inoculated into VW 1, VW4, VWS, VW6, and MW4. MW is not connected to the blower but it
is close to the inoculation/blower system.
