wells that are screened in the vadose zone but were not inoculated (6); wells that are
screened in the vadose zone and were inoculated (4); wells that are screened in both the
vadose and phreatic zones but were not inoculated (5); and wells that are screened in both
the vadose and phreatic zones and were inoculated in the vadose zone (1). All of the
inoculated wells will be monitored for vapors. In addition, vadose-zone wells VW-7 and
MW-1 and phreatic-zone well MW-14 will also be monitored, in order to provide control
data on non-inoculated wells.
Monitored wells will be screened using field instruments, and vapor samples will be
collected. Monitoring will be twice monthly, on alternate Mondays, beginning February 14,
as follows:
Constituents Units Sample Tvoe Anal is Wells
Oxygen % Cannister or bag ASTM D-3416 All
Carbon Dioxide % Cannister or bag ASTM D-3416 All
TPH-gasoline %0 Tedlar bag EPA 8015m MW-4, MW-
14, VW-1,
VW-4
BTE&X %o Tedlar bag EPA 8020 MW-4. At the end of the first month (February), one boring will be drilled 5 feet
northwest of VW-1. The boring will be drilled to a total depth of approximately 35 feet, and
will terminate within the upper silty clay bed. The boring will be continuously cored, and
samples will be collected from each lithologic unit below 20 feet. Samples will be analyzed
for TPH-g, BTE&X, and bacterial abundance and diversity. Drilling, sampling,
abandonment, and laboratory analysis will follow standard protocols for the project.
The second boring will be drilled at the end of March, and will be located adjacent to the
first boring in order to detect any changes in contamination or bacterial activity. This boring
will also be continuously cored, and will terminate within 5 feet of the groundwater table.
Samples will be collected from all lithologic units. Based on the results of these two borings,
a third boring may be drilled 10 feet northwest of VW-1 to gather additional data on the
radius of influence of the pilot test inoculation.
GROUNDWATER MONITORING
The objective of the pilot test is to determine the efficiency of in-situ soil bioremediation
at the site. No attempt to remediate groundwater has been made, and inoculum was not
2
